Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres School Project

The “Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres” is a new project and one which we believe is fully worthy of our support.  The Principal, Jules Robert, founded this school, located in Anse-a-Pitres Haiti on the border with the Dominican Republic, in September 2003 with the financial assistance of parents who wanted their children to receive a level of education not otherwise available.

Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres is a “not for profit” organization and currently provides education for some 298 pupils, 152 girls and 146 boys with ages ranging from 5 years to 15 years in seven classrooms with 6 teaching staff.  Half the pupils attend in the morning and the others in the afternoon.

After nearly nine years since the school was originally constructed, using very basic materials, it is now in a very dilapidated condition.  Classrooms are overcrowded, unhealthy and in many cases open to the weather as you can see from the photos below.  Sanitary conditions are basic to it mildly with only one toilet for use by all the pupils and staff.  There is no kitchen facility, so meals are prepared outside and brought into the school.

Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres also has no electricity, computers, office or telephone and the teaching staff are all volunteers receiving no salary, including the Principal.  What little funding is obtained, to provide the basic needs, comes largely from some parents and other private fundraising efforts.

Imagine Oneness Foundation have agreed to support the school by raising the finance needed for rebuilding the school to provide 5 new solidly constructed classrooms with windows to accommodate 35 to 40 children per class and a perimeter wall for the security and safety of the pupils while in attendance.  And as a second phase additional finance for the installation of adequate boys and girls separate restrooms and a kitchen facilities.

The cost of the initial phase totals approximately $14,000 and here you can download a Quotation for Anse-a-Pitre. The second phase costings amount to approximately $1,650 bringing the total costs to $15,650. Here you can download a Quotation for Kitchen and a Quotation for Restrooms both are in Dominican Pesos as is the main quotation for the classrooms.

Having visited the school, discussed the needs with the principal Jules Robert and the other teaching staff, and seen at first hand the conditions under which the children are forced to endure Imagine Oneness Foundation President and Treasurer both agreed that Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres was a very deserving cause and one the foundation should attempt to help. Both were particularly impressed by the attitude displayed by the children during their visit. The pupils are very well behaved in class and outside and considering the overall conditions showed a remarkable resilience and desire to learn despite the conditions under which they were being taught.

Although the most pressing need is finance for both phases of the rebuilding project, there is also a requirement for construction workers, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers. Bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances will needed once Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres has the bathrooms and kitchen finished. The school will also be in need of French speaking teachers to volunteer to assist with the educational development of the children at the school.

We hope that after reading about the Institute Community of Anse-a-Pitres school and seeing the photos of the condition of the school buildings you may feel moved to assist us in helping with the proposed rebuilding.  In reality $14,000, the amount needed for the first phase, is not a huge sum of money but the benefits it can provide to the pupils and teaching staff is immeasurable.

Any contribution is greatly appreciated, no matter how small, and via our website you will be able to see how your contribution has helped transform the lives of those who teach and learn there as we publish regular updates on the work in progress.

We are delighted to be able to provide an update on this project with grateful thanks to those sponsors who have very generously contributed funding to allow work to progress. Below you can view photos of the work underway and will appreciate that more funding is still necessary to enable the school to be completed and able to provide pupils and staff with adequate accommodation and facilities.
